About Doug Carrick

A century ago, fabled Canadian golf course architect Stanley Thompson left a legacy of superb layouts across this country. One of his most noted designs was at Banff Springs in the Alberta Rockies, not only because it was the first course in the world to cost $1-million to build, but because it was a pioneer in creating a fantastic playing experience in stunningly beautiful alpine topography. In designing Greywolf at Panorama, fellow Canadian Doug Carrick proved himself a worthy inheritor of Thompson's mantle. He comes by the title with some justification, having learned his craft from C.E. (Robbie) Robinson who, in turn, was a disciple of Thompson's. Thus the lineage remains unbroken, with Carrick blending his predecessors' inherent understanding of golf and the land upon which it is played with modern design philosophies and construction techniques.
Since striking out on his own in 1985, Carrick, like Thompson, has left his mark from coast to coast, as well as in Europe. His designs, including Greywolf, have won numerous domestic and international awards.

Carrick has studied all the traditional British layouts and read the classical architecture texts as well. Thompson’s influence can be seen in Carrick’s work through his style of combining Old World penal golf with the modern risk/reward style of architecture. “I love the way he used the principles of art in his work, the balance and harmony of his designs, the way he sculpted his bunkers to enhance the visual aspects of his courses,” says Carrick of Thompson.

Carrick’s style lets the land dictate the routing of the holes instead of the contemporary path of “moving mountains.” So unique is the "Cliffhanger," the dramatic sixth hole, Greywolf was actually designed around it. But with water on 14 holes and panoramic viewpoints everywhere, Carrick says, "There are 18 signature holes at this course."

One of the most breathtaking courses in Canada , Greywolf is noted for Doug Carrick’s ability to create a remarkable golf experience on a difficult, challenging site.

A mountain course that actually utilizes the elevation shifts of its setting, Greywolf demonstrates Doug’s uncanny knack for drawing drama out over 18 holes.

“Doug Carrick is a magical man when it comes to envisioning, designing and building golf courses,” says Peter Smith, Greywolf’s Director of Golf.

While Doug created a consistent, holistic theme at Greywolf, many have focused on the sixth hole, known as “Cliffhanger.” This par three, among the more fantastic holes ever designed in Canada , features a tee shot that must clear a daunting carry called Hopeful Creek, and land on a cliff side green, protected on three sides by vertical drops.

But there’s more to Greywolf than just one hole. In fact, Doug considered every visual element in designing the course. Shots on every hole feature a mountain or forest backdrop, making it very easy for players to pick up the flight of their ball. But as opposed to many mountain courses, which have restricted views due to trees, Greywolf offers amazing panoramic scenery. This is a resort course unlike any other.
